"Brushwipe Paintings"

Brushwipe Paintings are one of the first styles of painting I started working with on my painting journey…

The only painting style that came before that was the Stripe, and before that I was trying to create a similar style of painting to my “Coloured-in-Doodles”, which I felt I was having limited success with :/

A crucial thing I learned at that time was that the pieces would come out much better and more naturally if they followed the flow of the medium being using - i.e. letting the medium itself have a strong impact on how the piece should turn out…

I called this the Brushwipe Painting Style because it came about from the patterns and textures that were created on the paper I would use to wipe my brushes clean on (I only like to clean my brushes once I’ve got as much of the paint out of them as I can so as not to waste any paint :D )

I would then take the paper with the brush wipes on it and add some more details to balance the colour scheme and composition, and then put my signature on it when I felt it was ready…

The first brushwipe painting I created was back in 2011 and I called it “Blue Box” (above)...

…and to me it represents stepping outside of the box of expectation and to allow the creativity to flow in a natural and spontaneous way!

Since that first piece back in 2011 I’ve created about 40 or so paintings in a similar style, with some of my favourite ones shown below:

Larger Sizes for 2025..

So far most of these paintings have all been reasonably small - most have been about A4-sized, but this year (2025) I’m going to see if I can create the same effect in a variety of much larger sizes, so hopefully that will be a success!

The painting features a series of geometrically-arranged squares, rectangles and stripes in a somewhat Mondrian-style:

The painting is on 9mm deep MDF wood and uses a combination of acrylic, emulsion and metallic paint:

Each of the shapes is also outlined using chalk marker pen which highlights the edge of the shape and also has the effect of making the ink look like it's cutting into the surface of the painting:

The surface of the painting is also covered with a gloss varnish finish which give it a polished sheen that gives reflections under the light:

New Brush-Wipe Style Acrylic Painting -
"Gale Force"

New brush-wipe style acrylic painting from the new collection of paintings I've been working on...

It's called "Gale Force" and it's an abstract representation of a gale force wind.

It was created using a combination of acrylic paint, emulsion paint and chalk marker pen.

Painting itself measures 21cm x 29cm (approx.) and is framed in a 30cm x 40cm black aluminium frame.

New Acrylic and Posca Pen Painting from the new collection of paintings I've been working on...

It's a 20cm x 20cm "Tile-Style" painting on mdf board of a girl who lost something and then found what she was looking for again.

The painting has a white background and white edges with a carbon black border/frame painted onto the wood.

The painting was created largely using acrylic paint but the outline of the girl was created using a light grey Posca chalk pen.

"White Haze on Electric Blue"

New Brush-Wipe Style painting I finished recently - it's a monochrome-white painting on a metallic-blue background and has quite a Mark Rothko feel to it...

Often with this style of painting I don't use a border but for this particular piece I wanted a bold outline to complement and contrast the hazy nature of the main body of the piece.

This painting is part of a new series of pieces I've been working on since moving to a new studio in Duivendrecht. Most of the paintings in the series have been on wood (including this one) as it's a new medium I'm experimenting with...

I'll be posting more paintings from the new series here on the blog and on my Social Media pages if you'd like to see the new pieces as they're released...

Just recently finished this new Smiley Face Painting...

It's the first smiley face painting I've made using metallic paint for the background and I found that using the metallic paint on wood creates the effect of making the painting looks like it simultaneously made of metal and wood.

Just finished a new acrylic painting in the Brush-Wipe Style that's a part of a collection of 10 or so pieces created to inaugurate my move to a new studio in Duivendrecht.

It's a combination of loosely applied acrylic paints that creates a hazy, etheric feel. I've also mixed in some metallic gold paint too which gives an eye-catching glimmer when viewed from certain angles...

The painting is on 9mm thick mdf board and measures 20cm x 20cm

Mixed-Media Painting

Just finished the first piece from a new collection of paintings to inaugurate the move to my new studio in Duivendrecht... it's called "Golden Wire Spaghetti" and it's a mixed-media piece using acrylic paint and Posca chalk pens on MDF board.

For this piece I used a charcoal black acrylic foundation and then put the chalk pens on the top.

When I was using the pens I didn't let the ink sit long enough to dry so when the next colour was applied the ink from the lines would bleed into one another creating the effect of making them look like they've melted into one another.

I've also used a number of different thickness' of pen to create more depth and have used metallic silver and gold ink to contrast against the matt blackboard-like finish of the background.

This is the first completed piece of this new collection - so far I have 5 more completed pieces with another 5 or so still in progress...

I'll be posting the new pieces as and when they're completed over the course of the next few days and weeks so keep an eye open if you want to see the new pieces!
