Commission Process
Thank you for your enquiry about commissioning some original Michael Carlton artwork.
Please find below a brief overview of the steps involved in the process of commissioning original work, along with a brief overview of how commissioned projects are priced.
Step 1: Initial Discussion
The first stage of the commission process is to have a quick chat (either in person, over the phone, or by email/text) to broadly discuss what it is you’re looking for.
Based on our discussion I can then send or refer you to some existing examples of similar work to give you a better idea of what might be possible and send more specific information.
Of course there is no charge or obligation for this initial chat – it’s just a good opportunity to see if what I have available will fit what it is you’re looking for!
Step 2: Design and Development/Conception
If you decide to proceed then the next stage is to take whatever initial idea has been discussed/suggested and to develop and refine it until there is a final tangible design.
This stage involves working on colour schemes, developing designs, and creating (if required) small-scale versions and photoshop images of the proposed artwork.
The goal of this stage is for me (as the creator) to have a clear visual reference point from which to work, and for you (as the client) to have an accurate preview of how the piece will look upon completion.
After completing the design phase I will then be able to quote a more accurate price for the finished article and will also be able to give you a more accurate estimate of the completion date.
The design phase takes place in a series of (typically) 3 rounds i.e. based on the information I have from our discussion I will then create an initial series of colour-schemes, sketches etc. to start moving in the general direction of the final design.
Once I've developed them as far I can we then speak again to discuss and develop them further, and then I go to work on the next round... and that process is then repeated until the final design is decided upon.
The final design is typically reached within 3 of these rounds, but it can be more or less depending on the nature of the commission, but I should be able to give to give you a good idea of how much design is required after the initial discussion.
The price of a "round" depends upon the nature of the commission, the amount of design work required, and if any additional materials are needed, but to give you an estimate the price of a round starts from €45.
Again, after an initial discussion I will be able to give you a much more specific estimate regarding design costs/expectations etc.
Step 3: Rendering/Physical Creation
Once the design has been finalised and approved work can then begin on the physical rendering of the commission.
The duration of the rendering is entirely dependent upon the size and the amount of work required to complete the commission. It typically takes from 2-6 weeks to complete a commission, but take can up to a 2-3 months or more.
As mentioned above once the design phase is complete a completion date for the commission can then be more accurately proposed.
Step 4: Delivery/Installation
The final stage is transporting the artwork from where I’m based to wherever you are!
This can be as simple as sending the item via courier or post, but may also require specialist transportation if the commission is particularly large or of unconventional proportions.
Collection in person is also a possibility, as is assistance hanging and/or installing the artwork at it’s destination as well if required.
Commission Pricing Structure
The final price of a commissioned creation is the sum of the following 4 factors:
1) Design Work - the cost of converting the idea/initial concept into the finalised, tangible design.
2) Rendering - the cost of the physical creation of the commission.
3) Delivery/Transportation – the cost of getting the finished commission from where I am to where you are.
4) Optional Service Charge/Gratuity – a completely at your discretion service charge/gratuity based on how happy you are with the finished product and the design service you received…
Each of these 4 factors can vary greatly depending on the nature of the commission, and I would be happy to give you a ball-park figure estimate for each after having a quick chat to find out the kind of thing you might be looking for!
